Kaslo
The quaint village of Kaslo sits on the shores of Kootenay Lake looking up to the snowcapped peaks of the Rockies. Unlike most other towns in the area, Kaslo owes its birth to the logging industry rather than mining. In its hey-day, Kootenay Lake was filled with steam-powered sternwheelers that serviced communities along its shores and travelled as far south on the Kootenay River as Idaho. The S.S. Moyie, now making its home in the village, is the oldest surviving passenger sternwheeler in the world. The interior of the ship has been redone to showcase its original luster, and tours through the vessel occur daily throughout the summer.
For over the past century, Kaslo has taken pride in its May Day celebration - a festival few other cities in Canada can claim to have celebrated uninterrupted for as many years. Watch local first graders dance and weave their coloured ribbons in the May Pole Dance and join the crowd cheering on the May Queen Pageant. Become part of a tradition that Kaslo honours each year without fail!
